Where Do Little Viera Come From?

It all began with a simple, yet profound question.

"Ritz?"

Marche began.

"Where do little Viera come from?"

His pink haired companion looked at Marche as though he were a madman; where did babies of any species come from? She opened her mouth to reply, but ceased; it dawned on her that she had never once seen a male Viera. Despite being in a clan of nothing but Viera, she'd never heard them mention males, much less seen any evidence that they existed, But she always assumed that they did; it was how it worked in humans, so she just thought...

"I... I assume... that they do the same thing... as everybody else."

Ritz finally responded, but her voice was unsure. Marche looked over at her, eyes questioning her unsure tone. She could only shake her head.

"I'm SURE they must do the same thing everybody else does! I mean, I've never seen a male Viera, but I'm sure they have to exist. Right? I mean, you can't just... have nothing but women... right?"

Now it was Ritz who was asking the question, putting Marche on the spot to answer. He scratched his head for a moment, playing with the strands of blond hair that stuck out from his head in-front; he was more curious than ever now.

"... Say, Ritz..."

He turned and looked at his companion; she met his gaze.

"Maybe we should... you know... ask..."

Ritz became flustered at the mere thought of asking a Viera about her personal life. She shook her head vigorously.

"No way! That's an invasion of privacy! Besides... wouldn't they think us... you know... weird...?"

Marche paused, pondering the awkwardness of asking a Viera how they bred. Part of him wanted to just forget it, but a part of him wanted to know. He looked down to the floor, crossing his arms over his chest; he had no idea what to do now.

"Um... I... I suppose that... maybe..."

Ritz's voice came from seemingly nowhere, causing Marche to look up. Ritz's face was fire red; he found it sort of funny how worked up she was getting over this whole thing.

"Maybe?"

Marche parroted the last bit of her sentence.

"Maybe we could, you know... ask Shara. I-I mean... I know her pretty well, so it's not like asking a total stranger. And... she shouldn't think it too strange. Right?"

Marche's eye lit up and he nodded most vigorously; Shara wouldn't deny telling them if Ritz asked her! Jumping to his feet, Marche grabbed hold of Ritz's right hand and pulled her to her own feet. She looked up at him, face still red, eyes full of surprise and shock.

"Well come on, let's go find and ask!"

Ritz was shocked at his sudden actions; she blushed even more, if that were possible at the sudden hand grabbing.

"H-h-hold on, Marche!"

Ritz protested, Marche was confused.

"Why? I know you want to know as much as I do! Or... are you scared to ask?"

Ritz's eyes flew wide, then narrowed; he had just challenged her. Her pride demanded she soldier on and do it as soon as possible; she nodded. The two of them went off to find Shara, and to seek the answer that they both desired to know. It didn't take long for them to find her, though; like all Viera she had an affinity for nature, and was naturally attracted to the wilds.

Just outside of Muscadet she was, enjoying the nature that her kin loved so very much. Ritz hesitated upon seeing her, but Marche was all gung-ho to ask. Shara, being a Viera had superior hearing, she knew they were there before the two could even say a word; she turned to greet them with a wave and a smile. This only made Ritz more hesitant, she stopped short while Marche went to white haired woman.

"Shara, Ritz and I want to ask you something."

Marche began, gesturing to his side where he assumed Ritz would be. Shara blinked and then raised an eyelid; Marche turned and noticed his companion was missing. Perplexed, he turned around; Ritz's eyes were locked on the ground as she stood more than twenty feet from the two of them. Marche sighed, Shara giggled; Ritz, she went into a fidget.

"Hey Ritz, are you going to do this or should I?"

Marche called out to the fidgeting girl; she only fidgeted more. Marche shrugged and turned, facing the Viera who seemed more than a bit amused by the whole thing.

"So, what is it you wanted to ask?"

Shara asked, figuring it was something minor; not, you know, the facts of Viera birth and such. But that was what Marche was after, all right.

"Ah... yes, well... um... see..."

Marche's cheeks turned slightly red; he himself was becoming flustered. Shara was even more amused by this turn of events, but she was curious as well; something was up. Marche took a deep breath, he tried to calm himself; he went through his question in his head, hoping it would make it to his lips and beyond. After a few moments the young blond boy nodded to himself and looked at Shara, square in the eyes.

"Ritz and I were curious... and we hope you don't mind, or think us weird, but... where, exactly do... Viera come from?"

Finally the question was out. Marche felt proud of himself, Ritz looked up in shock that he had actually asked the question. Shara was taken aback, her face showing a bit of surprise. These two children had just asked her how Viera reproduced. Moments wore on, Marche grew nervous while Ritz went through Shara's reaction in her own head; she assumed the Viera would be offended and walk away after calling them sick little freaks.

Instead, Shara laughed. She laughed hard; Marche backed away a bit, thinking the Viera crazy. Even Ritz was shocked at the reaction. Upon seeing their reactions, Shara calmed herself, wiping a tear from an eye; that was a good laugh she just had.

"Well, you see... little Viera come from their mothers."

Marche blinked, Ritz blinked; Shara smiled.

"... So there... are male Viera?"

Marche asked, puzzled. Shara shook her head.

"Nope. Viera are all female."

Marche was... more than confused, to say the least. Ritz, though, rushed up beside her blond companion, then pressed the issue;

"But how? I mean, if there aren't any males, then how can you have children? I thought you needed a man to... to..."

Ritz fell silent, her face turned red once more. Marche began to try and figure out how a female only population could reproduce; the things that came to mind made him shudder in abject horror. Shara cocked her head to the side, then straightened it back up.

"Well, you see Viera do need men. It's just that we... you know... can mate with other species."

It was all perfectly normal and rational to Shara, but to Marche and Ritz it was almost as though she were speaking some other language. Possibly Spanish.

"You... mate with... other species..."

Marche said with hesitation, Ritz had a look of confusion in her eyes.

"But... why? What happened to all the males?"

"We never had them?"

The was the best thing Shara could come up with. This only further confused Ritz.

"Okay, so... Viera mate with others, and that's where they come from. But... do you only give birth to Viera?"

Marche was trying to piece it together, and Shara nodded;

"It all makes sense when you think about it."

Ritz was all manner of confused by this point; it made no sense to her.

"How does this even begin to make any sense?! You... you're all women who have to mate with men of other species to make babies! Where did you all come from to start with?! Why were you made to make babies with other species?!"

Ritz was all worked up, Marche took a few steps away from his companion. Shara blinked and pondered for a moment.

"Well, you see... it all started with a tree..."

Ritz's face turned pale.

"What?"

"A tree. Exodus, to be exact. It started this whole thing."

Shara replied, causing Ritz to furrow her brow. Marche was the one confused now; Ritz was just frustrated.

"S-so... Exodus gave birth to the first Viera... who then in turn... made babies with other species..."

Marche mumbled, Shara nodded again;

"Pretty much."

Ritz rubbed the bridge of her nose and shook her head.

"This world makes no sense at all. Now... I'm just gonna... go lay down for a bit."

Ritz turned and walked off, leaving Marche and Shara alone. Shara chuckled slightly;

"I think I broke her brain."

Marche could only nod in agreement.
